Tempo and stroke shape from an AirPod in your grip
Tuck an AirPod into the end of the grip and every stroke comes back with tempo, backswing and follow-through length, face rotation for putts, and estimated club speed, plus a 3D replay with the measured angles drawn on it.
Golf is part of the Kinapod app, free for now. Works with AirPods Pro (2019 or newer) and standard AirPods (3rd generation or newer).
Stroke replay
A 3D club replays every stroke in slow motion with the measured backswing and follow-through arcs drawn on it.
Face rotation
How much the putter face rotated between address and impact, measured against your own setup.
Every club
Pick the club before the session, from putter to driver, or add your own custom clubs.
Introduction
Launch monitors start at hundreds of dollars and putting labs at thousands. Kinapod reads your stroke from an AirPod riding in the top of the grip: tempo, how far back and how far through, how much the face rotated on putts, and how fast the club was moving.
What it measures
- Tempo, backswing time over downswing time, with the raw times too. The classic reference is 3:1 for full swings, 2:1 for putts.
- Backswing and follow-through length in degrees of shaft sweep, the same numbers drawn as arcs on the replay.
- Face rotation for putts, as the change from your address.
- Estimated club speed from the peak downswing rate and the club's length.
- Consistency, 0 to 100, from how tightly your tempo and face repeat.
Kinapod is a practice and training aid. Metrics are estimates derived from motion sensors and are not a certified measurement instrument.
How to use
- Tuck one AirPod stem-down into a hole in the end of the grip, snug enough to move with the club.
- Pick your club, then hang the club vertical for a second when asked: that one gesture calibrates the shaft.
- Hold still for a moment before each stroke until the app shows ARMED, then play. Strokes detect themselves.
- Keep the second AirPod out of its case, near the phone.
